GEOGRAPHY AS AN INTORDUCTION

Geography as an Introduction

Geography- A Multidimensional Discipline

Geography – the mother of science, not only deals with the earth`s surface but the universe also. It deals with all possible ways of life. Geography is highly interdisciplinary.

Geography is the study of earth`s landscapes, peoples, places and environments. It is quite simply discuss about the world we live. Geography is in the broadest sense, an education for life and for living.
or

Simply we can say that Geography is the science of the surface of the earth and it habitants.

It is one of the oldest and most diverse field of study, so it offers an introduction to a unique of eventual careers. Bergman and Renwick explain that “Geography is the study of the interaction of all physical and human phenomenon at individual place and how interaction among places form patterns and organize space” in the book namely “Introduction to Geography-People, Place and Environment”.

Geography as an important subject which tries to study about the physical as well as manmade aspects of the earth and also studies the spatial variation on the earth’s surface. It is the major discipline that is concerned with the identification, analysis and interpretation of spatial distribution of phenomena and their areal associations as they occur on the surface of the earth.

Some Definitions according to scholar's:

Richard Hartshorne:

“To provide accurate orderly and rational description and interpretation of variable character of earth surface.”

Gregg Wassmandorf, 1995:

“Geography is the study of the patterns and processes of human (built) and environmental (natural) landscapes comprise real (objective) and perceived  (subjective) space.”

Stamp:

“Geography is the description of surface of the earth, spatial differences and their relationship”

INTRODUCTION

According to Greek Scholar Eratosthenes-the word geography has been derived from two Greek words GEO-means ‘Earth’ and GRAPHIA-means ‘Descriptions’.

We in geography focus our attention to study the earth surface as the home of man. Ackerman in 1965 defined geography as “the study of spatial distribution and space relation of the earth surface”.

Following are the major concepts which have been emerged from the definitions of geography by different scholars:-
     Earth Surface
     Location
    Aerial differentiation
    Spatial Organization
    Spatial distribution
    Ecological regions
    Man- nature interaction
    Cultural appraisal of the earth
    Time and Scale
   Cause and effect relation

However, we specially focus on the followings:-
      Earth Surface
      Aerial differentiation
      Spatial interaction
      Cultural appraisal
      Socio-economic condition
      Cause-effect relation
      Unity in diversity
